I convened two symposia as part of MESKLA to explore the themes of the project through critical conversations and discussion, inviting a range of creative practitioners and specialists to contribute.

Symposium 1
MESKLA | Brewyon Drudh Symposium

This sympoisum was produced in partnership with Lowender, an annual event that celebrates Cornish culture and its Celtic connections.

The symposium provided the opportunity to expand the conversations around contemporary Cornish cultural identities, with contributions by artist Libita Sibungu; Dr Shelley Trower; songwriter Angeline Morrison and artist Francesca Rowse.

Presentations and conversations were chaired by Dr Angela Piccini of Association of the Unknown Shores and BuTCH/*.

Symposium 2
WELCOME WORDS: When do welcome words become dangerous discourse?

MESKLA was invited to collaborate with FEAST and Carn to Cove on this one-day workshop & symposium for artists and arts-workers to share and support each other in courageous, inclusive and diverse making and producing for Cornwall. WELCOME WORDS began with a presentation from our host, cultural consultant, Lara Ratnaraja. The day was then given over to talking through fictional scenarios in small groups which were led by facilitators - Maria Christoforidou, Mark Trevethan, Seamas Carey and Léa Guzzo. These group discussions encouraged participants to think about methods of being open to alternative perspectives and experiences.

WELCOME WORDS - When do welcome words become dangerous discourse? was delivered in partnership with Cultivator and supported by the European Regional Development Fund, HM Government, Arts Council England and Cornwall Council and FEAST with in-kind support from Cornwall Council, Carn to Cove and Kresen Kernow.
