MESKLA at Kresen Kernow, 1st Feb - 29th March 2025 

This free, pop-up exhibition brought together all elements of MESKLA work, from podcasts, symposia, exhibitions and workshops, and invited visitors to contribute through conversation and sculpture making.

As part of this exhibition we asked visitors to re-imagine themselves as future ancestors and to reflect upon how this perception shift might alter their actions today.

What kind of ancestor will you be?

Gwyrdh Glas|Liwyow a Gernow, MESKLA at Flamm, October 2023

Gwyrdh Glas looks to the granite forms found scattered across Kernow such as at Carn Brea*, Trencrom and Rough Tor, and the connection to land and Kernewek/Cornish cultural identity that many talked about throughout MESKLA.

Visitors were invited to engage in making workshops in which ‘rock’ sculptures were created from reclaimed material, and painted in colours chosen and mixed by them that they felt connected to their identity and/or relationship with the land of Cornwall. These colours were then given names which were translated into Kernewek/Cornish.

Gwyrdh Glas | Liwyow a Gernow (Green Green | Colours of Cornwall) was a joint commission for Flamm & Platforma 7 with Creative Kernow, ArtNight Dundee & Counterpoints Arts. Workshops also took place with Hospital Rooms Cornwall Project and the mixed colours informed the permanent installation I made for Longreach House, Cornwall Hospitals Trust in 2024.

With thanks to  Kowethas an yeth Kernewek who loaned dictionaries to the project, and to Cornwall Council's Cornish Language Service who supported the project with Kernewek translation.

* Carn Brea is a rocky hill with granite outcrops shaped by the squeezing hands of giants; I grew up with it always in my vision.
