This body of work evolved during consecutive residencies at Auction House (Redruth) in Spring 2020 and Back Lane West in late Summer 2020.
This project thinks through my relationship with my materials and tools - the resources we use and the complex journeys they take before they reach our hands. It examines the tensions between the fragility and durability of different materials, the social and climate impacts carried by materials and how personal economic situations directly influence working practices.
This work also reflects on my part-time role as a heating specialist in plumbing retrofit work, where any new installation connects directly to the manual labour and choices of the workers who came before us. It acknowledges a deep responsibility to both trade and land - the necessity to consider those who will come next, to work with care, and to 'leave enough pipe' and room to work.
